Whether gathering intelligence in the field, or planning an attack, it is the social engineer’s ethical responsibility to consider the physical, mental, and social well-being of human assets and targets. Ethically engaging humans in the field preserves assets, controls outcomes, minimizes chances of being remembered, avoids many, many legal issues, and oftentimes elicits more information than do less conscientious methods. We examine various social engineering principles and discuss them in terms of socially responsible considerations and engagements/attacks.
